Step up to the table! – Ping Pong fever hits the Chinese Community Centre

This summer, 100 tables will pop up across London’s landmarks, squares, shopping centres, estates, pubs and train stations. From Soho Square to Westfield Shopping Centre, Tate Britain to the British Library and Heathrow Airport. This year Chinese Community Centre will also host a table.

As well as free-play, each table features a varied programme of master-classes, competitions and free to join activities.  Highlights of the Chinese Community Centre activity include:

·        Old vs Young  -  August 1st 12:30 – 4pm At St Anne’s Church Garden

Supported by Sport England’s Innovation Fund, Ping! has been created by Sing London, the participatory arts organisation who produced last year’s Street Pianos Project.  Ping! is delivered in partnership with the English Table Tennis Association who will bring Ping! to four more cities over the next two years, returning to London for 2012.  Ping! supports Sport England’s goal of getting a million people playing more sport by 2012.  With its array of surprising locations and varied public events, Ping! makes participation irresistible.

Big Thanks

In order to raise funds to relieve the Centre’s financial burden due to the continuing reduction of public funding and to continue to provide vital services to meet the needs of the Chinese community, the Centre successfully organised a ‘Come Sing with Us’ fundraising gala night at the New World Chinese restaurant on 23 May 2010. This event was also part of a series of celebrations to mark the 30th anniversary of the Centre.

Over 160 of the Centre’s friends, philanthropists and elderly members attended this joyful evening. Nine singing participants each donated £200 to enter the competition. All possessed a flair for singing and gave their best in a desire to win. After a night of high quality competition, Mrs A Liu was eventually crowned as champion with Miss Rosanna taking second place and Mr M Hui coming a close third. In addition to the singing competition, other activities during the evening included karaoke, a raffle draw and a charity auction. All our guests not only enjoyed the sumptuous cuisine, but participated in a great sing-a-long and generously donated to the lucky draw and auction. A total of £6,330 was raised during the night.

The success in the running of this fundraising event relies upon the generosity and kind support from all participants, companies and, of course, the hard work of our volunteers and staff. The Centre’s Management Committee therefore wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to all.
